About International DL

What we do

• Translate a licence you already hold. You upload the front and back of a valid national licence and a photo; we produce the IDP-format translation from it. We do not test drivers and cannot issue a permit to anyone without a valid licence.
• Deliver digitally first. The digital document is emailed after approval, usually within minutes. The printed booklet is optional and ships to your address.
• Make every permit checkable. Each permit carries a unique number and a QR code that opens its verification page on this site, so a rental desk can confirm it was issued by us and is still within its validity period.

What the document is — and is not

• It is a translation, not a licence. An IDP is only valid alongside the national licence it translates, and it stops being valid when that licence does.
• Acceptance is decided at your destination. Rental companies, police and insurers apply their own rules. Some countries require a printed booklet, some accept a digital copy, and a few do not recognise an IDP at all. Our country pages say which is which, and every one of them tells you to confirm with the official authority before you travel.
• We are not a government body. We are not affiliated with AAA, AATA, the United Nations or any national motoring authority, and nothing we issue replaces a document issued by one.
• There is no standalone "international driving licence". Some pages on this site use that phrase because it is what people search for; the document behind every one of them is the IDP translation described above.

How we keep country information accurate

This site publishes driving-rule pages for 154 countries and IDP guides for 30 nationalities. This is how that information is sourced and maintained:

• Convention status comes from the UN. Whether a country is party to the 1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic is taken from the United Nations Treaty Collection, and each country page links to it.
• Every page shows when it was last checked. The country pages currently read “Checked 29 August 2026”. That date is set by hand when the data is reviewed; it is not stamped automatically on each visit.
• Requirement, driving side and minimum age are stated per country, with a note on local practice — and each page repeats that rules change and that the official authority has the final word.
• Corrections are welcome. If a page is out of date, email support@internationaldl.com with a link to the official source. We check it against that source, update the page and move the checked date.

Our guarantee

If a permit we issued is refused by a rental agency or local authority, you are eligible for a full refund within 30 days, with proof of the refusal. Questions about International DL

Is International DL a government agency?

No. International DL LLC is a private company registered in Denver, Colorado. We are not affiliated with any national licensing authority, motoring association or the United Nations, and nothing we issue replaces a licence issued by a government.

Is an IDP from International DL legally valid?

What we issue is a certified translation of your existing national licence in the International Driving Permit format. It is only valid together with that licence, and whether a rental company, police officer or insurer accepts it is decided at your destination — some countries require a printed booklet, some accept a digital copy, and a few do not recognise an IDP at all. Our country pages say which applies, and we advise confirming with the official authority before you travel.

How can a rental desk check that a permit is genuine?

Every permit we issue carries a unique number and a QR code that opens its verification page on this site, showing the holder name and validity period. If a document claiming to be ours does not verify there, it was not issued by us.
